had a job interview today at the b of a derivataves desk (i would be doing IT) the "technical" interviewer had a long list of questions. some of them were essential core java knowledge (what does 'static' mean? what's a singleton?) then a string of questions like this: interviewer: what's the difference between made-up-sounding EJB 1 and made-up-sounding EJB 2 me (internally): who uses EJBs instead of an enterprise framework that actually works? why are you asking questions that i can google in 5 minutes? me: i don't know interviewer: what are the 3 different kinds of design patterns? me (internally): there's 3 different kinds? my book had 4 different kinds, and the mark of a good coder isn't the categories that you think design patterns are sorted into anyway me: i can't remember, really then, when she's done with her list of questions, she says "ok we're done" me: "we're done? don't you want to he...

        they're idiots what i have gotten good at is figuring out who the idiots are before i interview, for the most part usually in the phone interview/first contact, i ask several questions about the stuff they use/what they value...i've even asked the person straight out if they do specific-skill hiring more fundamentals/intelligence-based hiring if they choke/balk or get defensive about hiring problem solvers instead of languages/frameworks, for the most part, get out of there certainly some frameworks are so complex that they take a while to get good at, but if that's ALL they do and all they want to hire for, then they don't have any hard problems to solve

Ever wonder how asshole upper management types who don't seem to know anything themselves keep landing sweet gigs? apply for the job you want and taylor your resume / skillset / presentation for that job. I know plenty of people with sweet jobs that *can't* do the job themselves but interviewed so good they landed it and then delegate or micromanage things. Sometimes they don't last long at xyz company but they can still land the job. Does this make sense to you?

so im trying out more different sites, after playing bodog for a bit and being pretty pleased with the interface and especially the very soft games there i tried ultimatebet and titan poker today so seriously, what the fuck is wrong with the ppl that make these programs? you would think that with a million-dollar industry behind them they could hire someone else than some twelve-year-old to program their software, right? apparently, wrong. ultimatebet writes its fucking uninstallation information to c:\program files. what the fuck is up with that? im running german xp, my program files folder is c:\programme, the first thing ever you learn when making installation routines is to never never ever ever use any path hard-coded. this just pisses me off so i install titan poker. it doesnt even fucking ask me nor tell me where it puts itself and auto-installs to c:\poker\titan poker SERIOUSLY WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU GUYS

I have my laptop hooked up via HDMI to a Sharp Aquos but when running movies, the color is clearly shifted red. Anyone solved this problem before/have a quick fix? Fuck I wish I had SC2 Beta. Maybe I will pay $100 off Ebay. Then again, I havent even touched Mass Effect 2 on Xbox.

Snowy also scouts that Wax only went 1 gate so I decide to go for him instead with my initial zealtos. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/01-doublegate.jpg"> I'm chrono-boosting both my first zealot and the second/third which are building in tandem from my two gateways, but by the time my first zealot gets there, Wax already has 3 zealots. I tell Snowy that there's no way Wax didn't 2 gate, but it turns out from the rep that I didn't account for the later than usual 2 gate (I usually do 12-gate, 13-gate), the constantly chrono-boosted gateway of Wax, and the long travel time. After I get a few more zealots and Snowy gets a decent sized marines army, we decide to move out. As I'm traveling down the right pathway, I run into Nate's SCV and kill it. My zealots make it to the high ground of the high yield expansion on their side of the map and I see Wax moving his zealots towards Nate to help defend an attack at Nate's base, so I ping Wax's base as the target for the attack. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/02-crosspath.jpg"> We get into Wax's base and Snowy moves in towards the probes while I hang out by the ramp as I see Wax moving his zealots back towards his base. They eventually get there followed by Nate's marines. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/03-attack1.jpg"> There's about an equal number of zealots and marines, but I accidentally let one of my zealots attack the gateway instead of engaging Wax's zealots, and extra marine reinforcements from Nate as well as Wax's probe help them defend the attack. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/04-attack1end.jpg"> During the attack, I spot a Stargate from Wax, and start throwing down a couple of cannons in my base to defend against air. As they're warping in, Wax comes in with a void ray and start harassing while I run around with a sentry, and later a couple of stalkers to fend him off. Meanwhile, Nate also slips in a couple of reapers to do some harassing. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/05-harass.jpg"> I eventually hold it off without taking too much damage, and Nate flies the reapers over to Snowy's natural where he's able to ward it off with marines only losing 1-2 SCVs. I have control of the right-hand Xel'Naga watch tower so I see Nate moving some infantry up the right side and I ping Snowy expecting an attack, but nothing materializes. A little bit later, he moves in on Snowy's natural with a small force while sneaking some reapers in the back, but not much damage is done. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/06-distract.jpg"> We decide to go after Nate at this point, and since my forces were at Snowy's natural to held kill off Nate's infantry, we both end up going down the left side, which Wax sees. He had units at the high yield base, but when he sees the incoming attack, he moves back to get better positioning at his own base. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/07-escape.jpg"> Seeing Nate's SCVs and marine/marauder running up to high ground, I try to throw down a force field to stop him, but the first one is misplace and gives him some space to squeeze by. The second one, though, blocks the ramp completely, and we're able to pick off some of his units for free. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/08-block.jpg"> Nate lifts off his Orbital Command and Wax's units come in to help defend. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/09-battle.jpg"> With Snowy and I being sandwiched by Wax and Nate, with Nate having high ground, they deflect the attack. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/10-battleend.jpg"> We build up some more and we see Wax moving around a pretty big ground army on the minimap towards Snowy, but he ends up going up the ramp to the 11 o'clock expansion. He comes down to attack me while Nate comes in from the low ground. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/11-retreat.jpg"> I run away to my ramp to get better positioning and also to stall while Snowy sends some help. With a few immortals in my army, I'm able to hold off the attack with the help of Snowy's tanks and marines. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/12-cleanup.jpg"> There's another period of buildup, and then my probe at the Xel'Naga watchtower sees Nate expanding to the high yield base in the middle, so Snowy and I decide to attack that. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/13-highyield.jpg"> We plow through Nate's defending forces pretty easily, and things look to be going pretty well, until Wax shows up with a mothership and some carriers. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/14-mothership.jpg"> They kill off our attack, and Wax slowly moves towards Snowy's base, recalling a sizable ground force. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/15-recall.jpg"> At this point, I'm frantically trying to warp in units, but I know I don't have enough to save Snowy. Instead, I decide to try to finish killing Nate's base in the middle and then go for Wax's expansion to cut off his income, hoping that this will delay him enough while I build up enough units to kill his air. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/16-counter.jpg"> Snowy is getting annihilated, and Wax starts bringing back his mothership and carriers to defend. I easily kill his natural and move up the ramp to the 4 o'clock base between Nate and Wax's naturals as I suspect there is a base there. <img src="http://battlereports.com/users/Kralgon/sc2/1/17-counter2.jpg"> Wax has expanded there, and I'm able to kill off the nexus before his units arrive to defend. I run down the ramp towards Nate's natural, away from Wax's units, in an attempt to save them for a later battle, but I run right through Nate's stuff and he kills off all but 3 of my stalkers. thought i would share it here <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8174" target="_blank">https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8174</a> it's a video downloading add-on. download essentially any video you see online. set it up and click one button and it starts downloading whatever video it finds on the page you're on. works just about everywhere, never have to copy/paste youtube links into other sites to get a download link anymore, and places that don't have download buttons aren't a problem (i download that video JV posted and it's sweet). can't seem to get hulu working as it tries to download the little commercial right before the videos, but it's still great. nice little feature is the download button doesn't light up (clickable) unless the install detects a video. usually just means you have to hit play. once it detects and you hit download then you can close window and it keeps downloading in background whether or not video was fully loaded

        this isn't even about it requiring a lot of clicks or not, but the whole remembering how many hits a particular unit has taken was always among the coolest aspects of microing. especially with regard to peons this is absolutely ridiculous now, if you hurt one peon and it goes back to mining its sooo easy to just kill it, but in bw it always felt like somewhat of an accomplishment when you managed to do it. but also like, roach vs roach which is all zvz is, you can just always target the right unit and burrow the right unit and honestly it becomes even more about being faster than what would be the case without it. and lastly, the biggest problem is that playing with it sucks. it completely clutters the screen and makes it look ugly and whatever you have selected stops standing out. however, playing with it turned on also gives such a tremendous advantage that turning it off just isnt an option at all.

        i can't speak about any specific complaint but the general idea isn't crazy. people want to make sure the skill ceiling is high, that blizzard doesn't hold the hand of the player. the reason for the longevity of brood war is largely due to the fact that over a decade later, the top players are still improving and creating. a "harder" game lends itself to a longer lifetime. more jaws will drop, more eyes will watch and more people will play. thats just the general idea though cause i dont have a beta ._.

        I think blizzard has done a great job though, read my other posts. macro and base management is actually harder than in bw. but _some_ of the micro is too easy, in particular micro relating to killing peons (because peons have higher attack priority in sc2.. basically if you just send a bunch of lings to fight against zealots and probes, the lings that arent able to attack the zealot will just rape probes instead, and this was really one of the finest aspects of bw.) zealot vs zealot+probe is the same, if you have more units you win the battle and there's little point in adjusting what the AI is doing because it picks the ideal target itself. :(

        Exactly as you said, removing them if you don't like them is not an option as they give you such a huge advantage. I just played the AI as zerg, using a queen to heal my near-death hydras, sure it was fun to be able to do that, but it also ruins the aesthetics quite a bit. Imagine if there was a horrid neon pink HUD with a Coca-Cola advertisement in it that showed what the enemy was building. You'd hate it, but you'd have to use it or face a huge disadvantage.

        namely, in war3 you have far less units and they have far more hp. both players being able to identify the weak units is just part of the micro dynamics and it plays out alright, because part of the micro is just knowing whether you can take one or two or three more hits before backing out, trying to stun or slow weak units so they can't escape etc.. both players know that the other player knows what units have least hp and will micro accordingly. additionally targeting weak units is only part of the micro because pretty much all units have some sort of ability, in sc targeting the weaker units and remembering what units are weak has always been a big part of the micro, like in pvt you have a battle and at the end one tank has 30 hp and another has 150 and then you need to only use 2 shots on the 30 hp tank immediately before it gets to shoot.. doing it properly feels immensely rewarding, but with this aiding you, this aspect completely disappears. :( in sc2, or sc, it's ...

    Not to knock the XBOX360 because it is an excellent gaming system. But the PS3 does a lot more than gaming. It has Blu-Ray as you mentioned, but it is also incredibly easy to set up a media server on your computer that the PS3 works with. You can do this with the 360 too, but it was way too much work when I did mine... might be easier now but idk.

      is how robust xbox live is. i havent had any glaring problems with it. psn on the other hand, doesnt share the same network strength, but is free. since i got my ps3, the only thing i play on my xbox now is SF4.

the first few years of starcraft when there was no youtube and computers were weaker, we relied on battle reports and really really shitty poor quality captured videos (or even battle reports supplemented with animated gifs) and lamented how quake players had demos which were reasonable to download and we didn't blizzard releases replays now important games are generally distributed by video instead of replay because good players don't want their replays hanging around to be studied :)

log into (or create if you haven't) your bnet account. there's an option in there about sc2 beta profile settings where it downloads a system spec thing and saves it in order for you to opt-in to the beta selection. periodically blizzard is checking system specs and sending out beta keys. since it's started maybe 3 waves of keys have gone out? will probably be more later on. some also got them free from being members of fan websites since sc related fan sites got free keys (if the owner of the site signed up for them, JOHNNY_VEGAS). other got them by knowing a guy at blizzard who had some. lastly a few have just straight up paid for them over ebay, which were going for like $100-300

    I played the AI this weekend for about 10 games, the most I've played of SC2 thus far. The more I play it the more I want to play human opponents, but its certainly nice to at least be able to play the AI to get "some" practice in.

Indy Games Pack from last week's Steam sale - Artius [2 day]
Three of those games were such total garbage, that I feel bad that they actually got any money from me. Altitude was clearly the best, but I think everyone here already knew that. My second favorite was probably Galcon Fusion. I thought it was a pretty slick, fast-paced strategy game. Probably great for multiplayer, but I haven't done that yet. The other two that I actually can play are Super Laser Racer (as expected) and Bob Came In Pieces (good for the kids, no one here would enjoy it I think).
